Judges of the High Court are appointed by the President of India in consultation with the President of the Supreme Court and Governors of India under Article 217 of the Constitution, although subsequent judicial interpretations have given priority to the judiciary in the appointment process. The Supreme Court is headed by the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice ranks him 14th (within each state) and 17th (outside each state) in the Indian hierarchy. The number of judges in a court is calculated by taking the average principal settlement rate over the past five years as the national average or the average rate of principal settlement per judge per year for that Supreme Court, whichever is greater. GK Capsule Free pdf (download) https://www.safalta.com/static-general-knowledge-capsule

Importance

The Indian High Court is the highest court of appeals in the states and federal territories of India. However, the High Court only exercises original civil and criminal jurisdiction where the lower courts do not have the legal authority to hear such matters due to a lack of financial and territorial jurisdiction. The Supreme Court may also have primary jurisdiction over certain matters if specifically provided for by the Constitution, state law, or federal law.

Most High Court work consists primarily of appeals from lower courts and written petitions within the meaning of Articles 226 and 227 of the Constitution. Written jurisdiction is also the original jurisdiction of the High Court.

Division of High Court

Each state is divided into judicial districts, presided over by district judges and hearing judges. He is known as a District Judge when presiding in civil cases and as a Hearing Judge when presiding in criminal cases. He is the highest judicial authority under a High Court judge. Below that are the Courts of Civil Jurisdiction, known by different names from state to state. According to Article 141 of the Constitution, all courts of India, including the High Court, are primarily bound by the judgments and orders of the Supreme Court of India.

Oldest High Court

The Calcutta High Court is the oldest high court in the country and was established on July 2, 1862. High Courts, which handle a large number of cases in a particular area, have permanent judges' rooms there. Banks also exist in states subject to extraterritorial courts. Smaller states with fewer cases may have established county banks. Circuit benches (known as circuit courts in some parts of the world) are temporary courts that hold trials during selected months of the year. Therefore, cases created during this transitional period will be decided when the district court is in session.
