Important Question from chapter 6 :Bhakti-Sufi Traditions

Q-Discuss the ways in which the Alvars, Nayanars and Virashaivas expressed critiques of the caste system.

A- Alvars and Nayanars led the early Bhakti Movement. It was during the sixth century. Vishnu's disciples were known as Alvars, while Lord Shiva's devotees were known as Nayanars. They would move from place to place, singing devotional songs in Tamil in the name of Shiva or Vishnu, depending on the situation. It was not only a religious movement, but also a social movement. Many historians believe that the Alvars and Nayanars brought the caste system and Brahminism to an end. This is supported by the fact that the movement welcomed people from many walks of life. The Bhaktas came from the castes of Brahmin to artisans to even those that were considered untouchables.

Virashaivas was a Karnataka-based movement that began in the 12th century. Basavanna (1106-68), a Brahmin who served as a minister in the Chalukya king's court, led the campaign. Basavanna's disciples were known as Virashaivas, and they worshipped Shiv. They were also known as Lingayats, which literally translates to "wearer of Lingas." They questioned the caste structure, as well as the notion that any caste is polluting. This aided them in gaining support from the society's outcasts. Virashaivas also railed against other heinous practises allegedly forbidden by Shashtras, such as post-puberty marriage and widow remarriage. They also questioned the reincarnation notion.
