Over the past few weeks, 11 districts in West Bengal have reported at least 65 instances of black fever, often known as "Kala Azar." The districts of Darjeeling, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Kalimpong have recorded the highest number of Kala Azar cases.

A state official acknowledged that 65 cases of Black Fever have been found in 11 West Bengal districts as a result of recent surveillance. He said that the state administration will be able to stop the spread of the disease now that Kala Azar cases have been documented.

People who have spent a lot of time in Bihar, Jharkhand, or Uttar Pradesh were shown to be most susceptible to the Black Fever Kala Azar sickness. Kala Azar signs have also been present in some Bangladeshis. The state administration is anticipated to continue monitoring further patients.

The official reports that a few cases have also been reported in the districts of Murshidabad, Bankura, Purulia, and Birbhum.

Black Fever's root causes

The parasite Leishmania donovani is what causes black fever, also known as kala-azar. The sand fly Phlebotomine argentipus, which carries the disease, bites its victim.

Symptoms of Black Fever Kala Azar

The main signs and symptoms of Kala Azar are:
-Grayish discolouration of the skin

-Fever

-Anaemia

-Emaciation

-Enlargement of the spleen 

-Enlargement of Liver 

-Weight loss

-The chronic cases lead to darkening of the skin. 

Is Kala Azar widespread in India?

Almost 54 districts in four Indian states—Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal—have Kala-azar, which is a serious public health issue in that country. Communities residing in tropical and subtropical regions of the world are primarily affected by the vector-borne illness kala-azar.

Which state is hardest hit by Kala Azar?

Given that Kala Azar is most prevalent there, Bihar is the state that is most impacted by it. Out of Bihar's 38 districts, Kala Azar is present in about 33 of them. With case reports from 11 of the total 23 districts, West Bengal is the second-most impacted state.

Why is kala-azar referred to as black fever?

Due to the greyish discolouration or darkening of the skin that is frequently observed on the face, hands, and feet of people affected with the disease, Kala Azar is also known as Black Fever.
