Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education, Pune 411004 is an independent body established in compliance with the guidelines of Maharashtra Act No. 41 of 1965. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education conducts the HSC and SSC Exams throughout the state of Maharashtra through its nine Divisional Boards, which are situated in Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nasik, Kolhapur, Amravati, Latur, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri. There are around 21000 secondary schools (SSC) and 7000 junior colleges (HSC) in the state.

The "Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act" established the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in 1965 as a statutory and independent body (amended in 1976). The SSC and HSC tests for the 10th and 12th grades, respectively, are administered as one of the board's main responsibilities, among a few others. In terms of high school enrollment, it is India's second-most well-liked educational body, immediately behind the Central Board of Secondary Education. On January 1, 1966, the "Maharashtra State Secondary Education Boards" were created to oversee particular secondary education-related matters in the state of Maharashtra. Following an amendment to the act in 1976, the Board's name was changed to "Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education." Over 1,400,000 students take the major exam for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and 1,700,000 students take the major exam for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) each year, which are both administered by the Board. Exams are normally held in March, July, and October of each year, and results are typically made public in June and January, correspondingly. The previous academic year in the state of Maharashtra ends in March, while the new one starts in June.
