Exercise 4.1

Q1. What are canal rays
A1. Canal rays discovered by E. Goldstein in 1866. These rays are positively charged radiations which consist of positively charged particles of atoms. They are also known as anode rays. They can pass through the perforated cathode and then travel towards another cathode in a gas discharge tube. They led to the discovery of positively charged subatomic particles called protons.

Q2. If an atom contains one electron and one proton, will it carry any charge or not?
A2. The atom will be electrically neutral because the proton is a positively charged particle and the electron is a negatively charged particle their magnitude is equal and hence, net charge in an atom is zero.

About NCERT Class 9 Science Chapter 4 Solutions: Structure of the atom

In this chapter, we learn about J.J. Thomson's and E.Goldstein's contributions to the discovery of electrons and protons, respectively. Electrons are implanted in the positive sphere, according to J.J.Thomson's idea. Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering experiment paved the way for the discovery of the atomic nucleus. We also discover how successful Neil Bohr's model was in explaining how electrons are scattered in different orbits around the nucleus.
This chapter also discusses J.Chadwick's discovery of neutrons in an atom, leading to the conclusion that there are three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. It also clarifies terms like valency, atomic number, and mass number, which are crucial for identifying elements and their properties.
