List of Presidents of India: The President of India holds the symbolic position of being the head of the Indian state. List of all Presidents of India from 1950 to 2022

The president of India is the head of state of India and the supreme commander of the  Although vested with these powers by the Constitution of India, the position is largely a ceremonial one and the prime minister de facto exercises executive powers. To date, we have had 14 Presidents as the De Jure Head of Indian State. Droupadi Murmu: New President of India

On 25 July 2022, Droupadi Murmu took the oath of office as the 15th President of India, making history by becoming the second woman and the first tribal leader to hold the position.
Since July 25, 2022, Droupadi Murmu, an Indian politician, has held the office of President of India. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is the first member of an indigenous scheduled tribe to hold the office of President of India. She held a number of positions in the cabinet of the Government of Odisha between 2000 and 2004 before being elected as president. She also served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand between 2015 to 2021.

10. Giani Zail Singh July 25th, 1982 July 25th, 1987 He was the 7th President of India and was also a member of the Congress party.
11. Ramaswamy Venkataraman July 25th, 1987 July 25th, 1992 He was the 8th President of India. He was also a lawyer and a professional politician.
12. Shankar Dayal Sharma July 25th, 1992 July 25th, 1997 He was the 9th President of India, and he was also a member of the National Congress party of India.
13. Kocheril Raman Narayanan July 25th, 1997 July 25th, 2002 He was the 10th President of India and the best diplomat in India.
14. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam July 25th, 2002 July 25th, 2007 He was the 11th President of India, and he was a great scientist. He worked in ISRO and DRDO organizations.
15. Pratibha Patil July 25th, 2007 July 25th, 2012 She was the 12th President of India, and she was the first woman to Be President.

Presidents of India: Important Points

The Indian Constitution's Article 58 states a few conditions for a candidate to be eligible for the election of the president. Some of the following have been given below:
  • The President should be a citizen of India.
  • The President must be above the age of 35 years.
  • The President should be qualified for election as a member of the Lok Sabha.
  • The President of India should not contain any office of profit under the State Government, Union, and other local authorities.

President is the constitutional head of the parliamentary system of the government. He is the nominal head while the real power rests with the council of ministers with the Prime minister at the top. 

President Elections

The Election Commission on Thursday announced July 18 as the date of the 16th Presidential Election for electing the next President of India. The tenure of the current President Shri Ram Nath Kovind is to end of July 24th and as per Article 62 of the Indian constitution, the election of the next President should be held before the expiry of therm. Article 324 of the Constitution, the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the rules made thereunder vest the superintendence, direction, and control of the conduct of election to the office of the President of India in the Election Commission of India. The candidates must note that the procedure for the election of President is chosen from the Irish Constitution and unlike the British Constitution the head of the Indian State is not hereditary. 

President is elected by the electoral college of
(i) elected members of both houses of the Parliament
(ii) elected members of state legislatures
(iii) elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Delhi and Puducherry

President is elected for five years but can serve any number of times and is eligible for re-election. 

The Vice President acts as President in the absence of the president due to death, resignation, impeachment, or other situations if the Vice President's seat is vacant then the Chief Justice of India acts as the President of India.

The President can be removed from the post in case of violation of the constitution. This impeachment can be moved in either house of parliament. It needs approval or consent of 1/10 of the house and can be moved only if the speaker of the house agrees to it.

The President is endowed with all of the nation's executive, legislative, financial, judicial, diplomatic, military, and emergency authorities. He is in charge of the country's military forces. All of the government of India's executive decisions are technically made in his name. He can call a special session of Parliament or prologue it, and he has the authority to dissolve the Lok Sabha. He may propose 12 candidates for the Rajya Sabha from among those with expertise in the fields of literature, science, the arts, or social work. He has the authority to propose two Anglo-Indian candidates for the Lok Sabha.
