Q- Discuss the picture of urban centres that emerges from Bernier’s accout.
A- During the 17th century, about 15% of the population lived in the town. This was the average share of Western Europe's urban population. Mughal settlements were described by Bernier as "court towns." He meant towns that were entirely reliant on the imperial court for their existence and survival. These cities arose with the imperial court and faded with the impanel court as they relocated to new locations. Bernier noted numerous large towns and cities in his journey accounts, including Delhi, Mathura, Kashmir, Surat, Masulipatnam, and Golconda. As manufacturing centres, commercial towns, and religious towns, they grew in importance. In these cities, the merchant communities wielded considerable power. Due to their own caste and occupational bodies, they stayed organised. In western India, these commercial groups were known as Mahajans. Sheth was the name of their leader. The chief of the Merchant community in Ahmedabad was called as nagarsheth. Towns also housed musicians, architects, artists, lawyers, calligraphers, and other professionals.
