Q-How did prominent Indian merchants establish themselves in the colonial city?
A- Indian merchants and traders established themselves in colonial cities such as Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras. They worked for the British as agents or intermediaries and lived in historic courtyard houses in the Black Town. They concentrated on big swaths of land in these cities and made significant long-term investments. They intended to impress their British masters or colonial rulers, as well as white people residing in white towns, by throwing expensive parties during festival seasons and erecting temples to demonstrate their dominance and prominence in society.
