Staff Selection Commission General Duty (SSC GD) , is a national-level exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission
for recruiting candidates for the posts of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman (General Duty) . The forces in which they ( constables ) shall be recruited for general duty are as follows:
• Border Security Force (BSF)
• Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
• Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
• Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
• National Investigation Agency (NIA)
• Secretariat Security Force (SSF)
And recruitment for rifleman ( general duty ) will be for Assam Rifles.

SSC GD Salary Structure:

Job Profile :
- A General Duty Constable appointed through SSC is to undertake the duties of a guard or escort.
- GD constable has to supervise all the tasks and duties in the absence of Sub-inspector and Assistant Sub-inspector.
- In certain cases they might also get cases to investigate
SSC GD Constable has to work under the supervision of SHO and follow his instructions.
Apart from these the Constables Constable GD appointed in Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo Tibetan Border Police Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, Central Reserve Police Force,Assam Rifles, Secretariat Security Force,National Investigation Agency have specified tasks and duties .
The role of GD Constable in BSF- protect the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh Border, promotes sense of security among the people living in border areas, prevent trans-border crimes, unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India, prevent smuggling,anti-infiltration duties,collect trans-border intelligence.
The role of GD Constable in ITBP- protect the border between India & China (from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh), restore and preserve
order in any area ,Vigillance on the northern borders,detection and prevention of border violations,check for illegal immigration and trans-border smuggling, provide security to sensitive installations and threatened VIPs, maintain peace in the assigned areas and promotion of the sense of security among the local populace.
The major role of GD Constable in CISF-Provide security to various PSU’s and other important infrastructures,be in-charge of airport security at
all commercial airports , protect the Government infrastructural projects and industrial units.
Special Security Group (SSG) - To provide protection, safety, and security to Industrial undertaking/installations, also offer protection
against fire hazards.
The major role of GD Constable in SSB –To monitor and prevent cross-border crimes, and other illegal activities, to protect the Indo–Nepal and
The major role of GD Constable in CRPF- look after the internal security ,operate abroad as part of Indian Peace Keeping Force and the UN peacekeeping missions,provide VIP security to election duties, from guarding of vital installations to the counter-Naxal operations.
The major role of GD Constable in Assam Rifles –To provide internal security under the control of the army through the conduct of counter insurgencymand border security operations, provide aid to the civil power in times of emergency, and provide communications, medical assistance and education in remote areas. In times of war, working as a combat force to secure rear areas if needed
The Major role of GD Constable in SSF - This unit is responsible for entry in Secretariat premises, posting of guards at Secretariat gates and other places of premises, maintain the internal discipline, entry of vehicles and its parking, regulation for taking material out of Secretariat premises and protection of Secretariat property
Career Prospects :
The General Duty Constable has the scope of promotion after a certain period of service in different CAPF departments . They wil be promoted on the basis of their performances and the duration of their services. Oftentimes the candidates have to appear in the departmental exams to get promotions.
