Every year on June 3rd, the world celebrates World Bicycle Day. The day was first commemorated in 2018 when the United Nations adopted a resolution during the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in April.

193 member states signed a declaration declaring World Bicycle Day, encouraging them to include bicycles in international, regional, and subnational development programs.

The UNGA also recognized the bicycle's adaptability and longevity as an effective mode of transportation for over two centuries.

How is India commemorating World Bicycle Day?

Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports inaugurated a countrywide initiative to commemorate World Bicycle Day 2022 on June 3. From Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Delhi, the government launched a nationwide cycle rally program.

1.29 lakh youth will pedal 9.68 lakh kilometres in a single day as part of the World Bicycle Day 2022 event. The program's goal is to raise public awareness of cycling and encourage individuals to take up the activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, and other ministers attended the ceremony.

5 points for India's nationwide bike rallying program

In a single day, 1.29 lakh youth cyclists would traverse a total distance of more than 9.58 lakh kilometres.

Cycle rallies will be held in the capitals of 35 states and union territories, as well as 75 famous locations across India, on World Bicycle Day 2022.

In India, World Bicycle Day is commemorated as part of the 'India@75, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

The government is also hosting four activities in conjunction with two renowned youth organizations, National Service Schemes (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, to commemorate Bicycle Day (NYKS).

Cycle rallies will be held in 35 state and union territory capitals, 75 notable sites across the country, and all of the blocks on World Bicycle Day 2022.
