New term for CEO of Niti Aayog

The third CEO of the government-sponsored research tank for public policy will be Parameswaran Iyer. According to the Department of Personnel and Training's notice, his initial tenure will be for two years.

Amitabh Kant, the current CEO, will finish out his term, which is set to expire on June 30, 2022, before his tenure begins. Kant, a retired IAS officer from the Kerala cadre and a member of the 1980 batch, assumed leadership of NITI Aayog in 2016.

After serving in the IAS for 17 years, the 63-year-old decided to resign voluntarily in 2009.

After that, he began working on World Bank projects related to water and sanitation. Prior to joining as Water and Sanitation Secretary in 2016, he had worked for the World Bank in China, Vietnam, Egypt, Lebanon, and Washington.

In 2016, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation nominated him as its Secretary.

 Through the construction of almost 90 million toilets in rural India, he was the driving force behind the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which sought to end open defecation.

 In July 2020, he gave notice of his resignation and left to rejoin the World Bank in the US.

Iyer has previously held the position of Senior Rural Water Sanitation Specialist at the UN.

He had previously worked in Uttar Pradesh's education sector under Mayawati's administration.

Background

On February 17, 2016, Amitabh Kant was chosen to lead NITI Aayog for a two-year term. He has since received three one-year extensions. Amitabh Kant led several important initiatives during his six-year tenure at NITI Aayog, including the organization's national monetisation pipeline, aspirational district program, production-linked incentive scheme, ease of doing business program, Start-up India program, and island development program.
