A rare viral disease Monkeypox typically confined to Africa has been investigated by Health authorities in Europe, the U.S, and Australia. Several European countries reported the cases of virus-like Spain, the U.K., France, Portugal, Italy, and Sweden. Moreover, U.S. and Australia also confirmed their first cases and experts are attempting to determine the root cause of the recent spike. Some of the cases are because of the travel to Africa, infection is spreading in the community and it's raising the risks of a wider outbreak.

Since the first case was discovered on May 7, the number of cases in the United Kingdom has doubled. There are currently 20 documented instances of monkeypox in the country, with fears that there may be many more undiscovered. What is Monkeypox?

It is a rare disease that is caused by the monkeypox virus and it’s a part of the same family i.e. smallpox which is less severe. In 1958, the monkeypox virus was first found in captive monkeys. This didease generally occurs in the remote parts of West and Central Africa. Also, the first case of monkeypox in humans was recorded in 1970.

How you catch Monkeypox?

Mockeypox generally spread because of closer contact with the other person, material, or animal tahtare infected with the virus. The virus enters the body with respiratory tract, broken skin or through nose, eyes and mouth. The transmission of human to human commonly occurs through face-to-face contact but the animal to animal transmission occurs through a scratch or bite.


What are the Symptoms?

Fever, headaches, muscular discomfort, swelling, and back pain are among the first symptoms of monkeypox. A rash appears one to three days after the onset of fever, usually starting on the face and spreading to other regions of the body such the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The rash passes through various stages until the legions scab and fall off, causing extreme irritation. The illness normally lasts two to four weeks and then goes away by itself.

What are the Treatments?

Although most instances of monkeypox are mild, there are presently no proven, safe therapies. People suspected of being infected with the virus may be placed in a negative pressure chamber, which are rooms intended to isolate patients, and monitored by health-care workers wearing personal protection equipment. Smallpox vaccines, on the other hand, have proven to be mainly efficient in preventing the virus's transmission. The vaccination is currently available in countries like as the United Kingdom and Spain for persons who have been exposed to illnesses to help lessen symptoms and transmission.
