Explain the following: Carbon cannot reduce the oxides of Na or Mg.

Na or Mg are highly reactive metals. They have greater affinity for oxygen than for carbon. Hence, their oxides are stable. To reduce them with carbon, very high temperature is required. At this temperature, these metals react with carbon to form corresponding carbides.
