In the nineteenth century hundreds of thousands of Indian and Chinese labourers went to work on plantations, in mines and in road and railway construction projects around the world. The methods used for recruitment of the indentured labour in the nineteenth century were as mentioned below : In India indentured labourers were hired under contracts which promised return travel to India after they had worked five years on their employer’s plantation. Their recruitment was done by agents engaged fyy employers and paid a small commission. Agents tempted the prospective migrants by providing false information about final destination, modes of travel, the nature of work and living and working conditions. Sometimes agents even forcibly abducted less willing migrants. Their living conditions were harsh. They had no legal rights. That is why it has been described as a new system of slavery. Often migrants were not told that they were to embark on long sea voyage.
