Explanations a. Total Revolution → ii. Jayaprakash Narayan The JP movement, which initially had students within its fold, now had a national appeal and character. The movement called for total revolution in the social, economic and political spheres in order to establish true democracy and demanded dismissal of the Congress government in Bihar. The movement was supported by the non-Congress parties like the Jana Sangh and the Bhartiya Lok Dal that projected themselves as a political alternative and targeted Mrs. Gandhi. b. Garibi Hatao → i. Indira Gandhi During the 1971 elections, Mrs Gandhi had coined the slogan, Garibi hatao in order to counter moves of her political opponents. This became the major electoral plank for the Congress and resulted in its victory.
