Soap is the sodium salt of higher fatty acid [RCOONa]. On adding common salt, Na+ ion concentration increases. Hence the equilibrium RCOONa (s) ⇌ RCOO̅ + Na+ shifts in the backward direction, i.e., soap precipitates out.
