Active transport occurs when molecules move from an area of lower concentration to a region of greater concentration, i.e., against a concentration gradient. The energy is necessary for molecules or ions to travel in the opposite direction. The pump is an enzyme that is thought to be a component of the membrane and is responsible for pumping chemicals into or out of the cell
