What role does adsorption play in heterogeneous catalysis?

In hetrogeneous catalysis, the reactant molecules diffuse to the surface of the catalyst and get adsorbed on it. An intermediate is formed in the adsorbed state which involves less activation energy than that of uncatalysed reaction.
