What is the advantage of using thick metallic strips to join wires in a potentiometer?

As the area of cross-section of metallic strips in potentiometer (and the meter bridge) is larger than a single wire. So the resistance of strip is much smaller by formula R=ρA1​ A long resistance wire is used in potentiometer by winding it as shown in the figure. The resistance below the metallic strips are out of circuit and calculation which makes easy to take reading and calculations.
