In which direction would a compass free to move in the vertical plane point to, is located right on the geomagnetic north or south pole?

The magnetic compass needle can point in any direction on the geomagnetic north or South pole. It is because the horizontal component of the earth's field is zero at these points (∵ The earth's field is vertical).
