The following reaction shows the acid dehydration of ethanol to produce ethene. The protonation of the oxygen atom in the OH group is the first step. The second step is the loss of a water molecule, which results in the formation of the carbonium ion. The final step is deprotonation, which results in the formation of a carbon-carbon double bond
