What is photochemical smog? How smog affects the biological world?
Photochemical Smog: It is a secondary pollutant. It is yellowish-brown smog that is formed under oxidizing conditions and high temperatures over cities and towns that are releasing a lot of nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons. In still air, the two interact photochemically to produce photochemical oxidants-ozone, PAN, aldehydes, and phenols. Photochemical smog does not have any appreciable amount of primary pollutants. It is also called Los Angeles smog. 2. Effect on the biological world: It causes bleaching of foliage of certain plants. It also causes silvering, glazing, and necrosis of the leaves. It causes respiratory problems in animals.
