How does algal bloom destroy the quality of a freshwater body?
Algal bloom destroys the quality of the freshwater body. Phosphorus and nitrates dissolved in polluted water act as nutrients for the green algal plants. These pollutants accelerate the growth of algae that may form a mat on the water surface. It is termed an algal bloom. Effect: The algae use oxygen at night and deoxygenate the water enough to kill the fish and other aquatic animals. The algal mat on the water surface blocks light, making it unavailable for submerged plants. The algae and dead organisms feed the oxygen-consuming bacteria.
