In a solid, the forces of attraction between the particles are very high and hence the particles of a solid will be very close to each other and the inter particle distance is least. In a liquid, the forces of attraction between the particles are very weak and therefore the particles of a liquid will not be closely packed with each other and the inter particle distance is large. In a gas, the forces of attraction between the particles are almost negligible or extremely weak and therefore the particles of a gas are very loosely packed and are very far from each other and the inter particle distance is largest.
