How do big cats mark their territory?

All large cats are highly territorial – every individual has a precise territory that includes searching grounds, dens and water holes. Big cats do not like to share their territories, even with members of their own species. They warn other cats off via marking these territories, generally via spraying urine or scratching trees. Sometimes, large cats rub their cheeks in opposition to rocks, timber or any other object. Other cats typically depart the area once they smell or see the signs.
