Consider the following points: 35,000 trees were being cut annually to build sleepers, in Madhya Pradesh alone in the early 1850s. Contracts were given to individuals by the government to supply the required quantities. The forest around the railway tracks started to disappear quickly as the contractors cut down the trees indiscriminately.
