Explanation In plants, archegonia are the female sex organ that is responsible for producing the female gamete. It is generally present in the life cycles of bryophytes, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms. The life cycle of pteridophytes It consists of two distinct phasesi.egametophytic phase and sporophytic phase. In soil, the gametophyte is formed through the germination of spore which refers tothe prothallus. The formation of gametophyte is independent.Sex organs are formed on the gametophyte. Male sex organs are generally known as antheridium and female sex organs are known as archegonium.Male gametes are formed in antheridia which are known as antherozoids. Antherozoids are spiral and multiflagellate. Fertilization takes place by zoodiogamy and zygote is formed as a result of fertilization. The zygote develops and forms an embryo. The embryo develops and forms a sporophytic plant with root, stem, leaf. Final Answer Archegonia are seen in the life cycle of bryophytes, pteridophytes and gymnosperms. Oogamous type of sexual reproduction occurs in pteridophyte. Their life cycle is diplo-haplontic. The most unique character of them is the independent alternation of generation, it means sporophyte and gametophyte are independent of each other.
