Suggest some methods to assist infertile couples to have children.
Explanation Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are techniques involves extraction of egg from female and sperm from male, mixing them and allowing them to fertilize either inside the female body or outside the body. The final embro is implanted in female body for further growth. Following are the methods of ART: IVF-ET In vitro fertilization/ embryo transfer: Donor’s egg is fertilized in vitro by the sperm obtain from her partner. They are fertilized in sterile medium. The fertilized embryo is transferred into the body of the donor for further development. Also known as test tube baby method. ZIFT Zygote intra fallopian transfer: The fertilized egg is transferred into fallopian tube from where it is carried to the uterus for further development. GIFT Gamete intrafallopian transfer: in this method unfertilized oocytes from the donor and sperm from partner are collected, and immediately transferred into fallopian tube of female who is unable to produce egg but can provide an environment for growth of fertilized egg. ICSI Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: Sperm and egg from both parents are extracted. A single sperm is directly injected into the ovum for the formation of an embryo. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then implanted in mother’s uterus. AI artificial insemination: The semen is collected from husband or a healthy donor and introduced in either into vagina or uterus of the female. This is also called IUI-Intra uterine insemination. Final Answer Assisted reproductive technologies include IVF-ET, ZIFT, GIFT, ICSI, and AI. These techniques can help an infertile couple to have child.
