Give examples to prove that microbes release gases during metabolism.
Fermentation is an anaerobic process that is part of microbe metabolism. Complex organic substances get converted into a simpler substance by the help of microbes. Carbon dioxide and energy is released in this process. Almost all bacteria and fungi carry out fermentation and produce carbon dioxide as a gas during metabolism. Very few microbes produce methane gas during metabolism. During secondary treatment of sewage, a number of gases (for example methane) are produced during microbial digestion of organic compounds in sewage treatment plants.
