Among all the three states of matter, the arrangement of particles in the gaseous state is the most disordered. There is no regular arrangement of gas particles. They have a lot of free space between each other compared to the particles in solid and liquid states and hence they can move very freely. Thus, the rate of diffusion of gases into other gases is very high. This is the reason why we can smell the scent of perfume from a few metres away.When someone applies perfume, the particles of the perfume get mixed up with the particles of the air, i.e., they diffuse into air and travel very freely at fast speed until it finally reaches us. Thus, because of very large amount of free space among gaseous perfume particles and their high speed, their fragrance reaches us.Final answer We can smell perfume sitting few metres away due to the diffusion of the particles of the perfume with the particles of air, which then travel fast and reaches us.
