Epidermis is the protective tissue layer of plants which forms the outer covering of entire plant surface and protects the underlying tissues. Role of epidermis in plants are as follows: It forms a continuous layer without any intercellular spaces.It protects the internal parts of the plants.It protects against water loss as the aerial parts of plants have waxy, water resistant layer on the outer surface of epidermal cells.Epidermis provides protection against mechanical injury and invasion of parasitic fungi.It regulates gas exchange.It secretes metabolic compounds.It helps to absorbs water and mineral nutrients.Final answer The epidermis in plants usually covers the roots, stems, leaves and flowers of plants. The epidermis is 4 layers thick - stratum basale, stratum corneum, stratum granulosum and stratum spinosum. The major function of epidermis is to protect plants against any external danger and help to maintain water balance of the plants.
