The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education was established as a statutory and independent body in 1965 by the "Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act." Updated in 1976 The board is largely in charge of conducting the SSC and HSC tests, which are given to students in the 10th and 12th grades, respectively. In terms of high school enrollment, it comes in second place in India, barely behind the Central Board of Secondary Education. To address certain secondary education-related challenges in the state of Maharashtra, "Maharashtra State Secondary Education Boards" were constituted on January 1, 1966. Following amendments to the act, the Board's name was changed to "Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education" in 1976. The Board administers the major tests for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) to over 1,400,000 and 1,700,000 students, respectively, each year. Exams are normally administered in March, July, and October of each year. The findings are typically made public in June and January of the following year. The previous academic year in Maharashtra ends in March, and the new one starts in June.
