Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education, Pune 411004 is an independent body established in compliance with the guidelines of Maharashtra Act No. 41 of 1965. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education conducts the HSC and SSC Exams throughout the state of Maharashtra through its nine Divisional Boards, which are situated in Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nasik, Kolhapur, Amravati, Latur, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri. There are around 21000 secondary schools (SSC) and 7000 junior colleges (HSC) in the state.

The "Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act" established the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in 1965 as a statutory and independent body (amended in 1976). Exams are normally held in March, July, and October of each year, and results are typically made public in June and January, correspondingly. The previous academic year in the state of Maharashtra ends in March, while the new one starts in June.
