Declination in Government Job Selection

The Lok Sabha was informed in a written response by Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, that the year 2019–20, the year prior to the full Covid–19 pandemic outbreak, had the highest number of candidates recommended for appointment at 1.47 lakh. The year, which also witnessed Lok Sabha elections, saw the selection of little more than 20% of the 7.22 lakh candidates chosen overall over the course of eight years.

With 2019–20 being the lone exception, the overall trend shows that fewer candidates have been chosen for presidency positions since 2014–15. 1.30 lakh people were recommended for appointments in 2014–15, however in the years that followed, the number rapidly dropped, decreasing to:

  • 1.11 lakh in 2015–16
  • 1.01 lakh in 2016–17
  • 76,147 in 2017–18
  • 38,100 in 2018–19
  • 78,555 in 2020–21
  • 38,850 in 2021–22.
The Center declared on June 14 of this year that it would be hiring 10 lakh employees in "mission mode" over the succeeding 18 months, in contrast to the 7.22 lakh candidates who were chosen for appointments over the previous eight years. The revelation was made by the Prime Minister's Office following PM Narendra Modi's "examination of the status of Human Resources in all departments and ministries." Singh's analysis also shows that a total of 22.05 crore applications have been received since 2014. The maximum number of tasks (5.09 crore) and the lowest number (1.80 crore) were completed in 2018–19 and 2020–21, respectively. Data analysis showed that 90,288 applicants were chosen annually on average out of the 2.75 crore functions that were provided during the course of the eight-year period.

Between 0.07 and 0.80 percent of applicants were chosen from among the several jobs obtained throughout the period of eight years. Congress MP Anumula Revanth Reddy from Telangana inquired about a number of job-creation initiatives, and Singh responded by listing a few of them while stating that "Employment generation coupled with enhancing employability is the precedence of the Authorities. Thus, the Indian government has put in place a number of employment-related policies.
