How Are Ordinal Numbers Written?

The numbers that indicate a thing's location are called ordinal numbers. These are the numeric values that have a suffix appended to them. The ordinal numbers should be written according to the rules listed below.
  • When the number ends with 1, the suffix must be -st.
  • When the number ends with 2, the suffix must be -nd.
  • When the number ends with 3, the suffix must be -rd.
  • When the number ends with 0,4,5,6,7,8 or 9, the suffix must be -th (including 10th, 20th, 30th…100th)
  • When the numbers end with 11, 12, 13…19, the suffix must be -th.

Normative Numbers

Children in the third or fourth grades are introduced to ordinal numerals. Due to the usage of suffixes, learning ordinal numbers can be difficult. However, we have made it simpler for parents and teachers to instruct their students to utilise the correct suffix with the correct cardinal numbers.
  • First (1st)
  • Second (2nd)
  • Third (3rd)
  • Fourth (4th)
  • Fifth (5th)
  • Sixth (6th)
  • Seventh (7th)
  • Eighth (8th)
  • Ninth (9th)
  • Tenth (10th)
  • Eleventh (11th)
  • Twelfth (12th)
  • Thirteenth (13th)
  • Twentieth (20th)
  • Twenty-first (21st)
  • Twenty-second (22nd)
  • Twenty-third (23rd)
  • Twenty-fourth (24th)
  • Thirtieth (30th)
The ordinal numbers can be written using these guidelines. With the help of the aforementioned criteria, we intend to convert the cardinal number into an ordinal number and make it simpler to decide which suffix to use when.
