Aarey Project: What is the Aarey Forest Controversy?

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, referred to as the lung of Mumbai, is situated next to the 1,287-hectare Aarey slum.

Earlier in 2019, the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government planned to build a metro shed at the Aarey Milk Colony location of its 33.5 km underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro Project.

However, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) began destroying trees just hours after the High Court rejected these petitions asking for a stay on the project's tree-cutting.

In addition, the Brihanmumbai Mumbai Corporation has permitted the metro officials to destroy up to 2,700 trees in order to construct a car depot for Metro Line 3.

What is the development plan of the Maharashtra government?

The Maharashtra Government had declared the project essential for growth in 2019.

The state's intention to move the metro car shed to Aarey Colony in accordance with the 2019 plan has been met with objections, and the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra has requested that Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni present the government's case before the Bombay High Court.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister, claims that the destruction of the jungles was not the issue. A judge was hearing the case. It was argued in front of the High Court, the Green Tribunal, and the Supreme Court. He continued by saying that a vehicle shed is essential for the Metro 3A line to function.

Why are activists opposed to the government's strategy in the Aarey Forest controversy?

The development cannot be made at the expense of biodiversity and flora, according to environmentalists who oppose the plan. In 2019, a Mumbai-based environmental group filed a petition with the Bombay High Court requesting that it issue a ruling designating the Aarey Colony as a "Reserved Forest" or a "Protected Forest" under the Indian Forest Act, 1947.

Numerous people flocked to the streets to protest the government after learning that the trees were being cut down. About 30 people had to be arrested and Section 144 had to be implemented.
