History of National Statistics Day
The first National Statistics Day was observed on June 29, 2007, to honour Prof. PC Mahalanobis' exceptional contributions to statistical development and economic planning. His birthday, June 29, was designated as National Statistics Day, and on June 5, 2007, a notice for it was first published in the Indian Gazette.
Why is National Statistics Day observed on the anniversary of PC Mahalanobis' birth?
Mahalanobis had become one of the leading characters in the post-Independent era when it came to gathering crucial statistical data that helped the Indian government make policies
Mahalanobis travelled to England to attend the University of Cambridge to pursue his studies in physics and mathematics after earning his degree in physics from Presidency College, Calcutta, in 1912.
The academician spent some time teaching at the Presidency College after leaving England, and in 1931 he was appointed to the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta.
In 1950, Mahalanobis is credited with founding the National Sample Survey. Its goal was to deliver thorough socioeconomic statistics.
In order to coordinate the statistics work in India, he had also established the Central Statistical Organization.
From 1955 until 1967, PC Mahalanobis served as a member of the Indian Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission's second five-year plan was based on Mahalanobis' mathematical analysis of the Indian economy. Mahalanobis Model was the name given to it subsequently.
