The Nationwide Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) administers the NTSE, a national test, to provide scholarships to deserving students enrolled in class 10. Only students in the tenth grade are eligible to take the NTSE, which is divided into Stage I and Stage II.
All Indian states and UTs jointly administer the state-level first-stage exam.

Scholarships for NTSE
For each level of schooling, about 2000 scholarships are given out.
These phases include:
- A monthly stipend of Rs. 1250 is offered for students in classes XI to XII.
- A stipend of Rs. 2000 a month is offered to undergraduate and graduate students.
- The scholarship amount for Ph.D. students is set in compliance with UGC guidelines.
2023 NTSE Exam Eligibility Criteria
The age requirement to take the test has been set by NCERT. Candidates must be younger than 18 years of age (as of July 1, 2022).
Students who are pursuing their studies at schools in India are eligible to appear in the stage 1 test, although there is no definite date provided for registration or the examination date due to the COVID situation in the nation. The following list of prerequisites applies:
- The aspirant must be a student in India's Class X in a Government or Private school.
- There is no limitation on domicile. The candidate may be from any Indian State or Union Territory.
- Candidates enrolled in open or remote learning who are under 18 years old, unemployed, and taking their first Class X board exams are also eligible to write the NTSE 2023.
Stage 2 Eligibility for the NTSE (National level examination)
Only students who passed the state-level test at stage one are allowed to take the stage two exam.
NCERT would inform the chosen candidates via its official website with their roll number, test location, and date.
NTSE Eligibility for International Students
- Indian students in Class X or similar who are studying abroad are qualified to take stage 2 (second level test) without having to take the stage 1 exam beforehand
- The applicant must have received a 60% on their yearly test from the previous year.

- Candidates must submit their request to the institution's head along with a certified copy of their Class IX transcript. By December 31 of the relevant year, the request must be received by the Head, Department of Educational Survey Division, NCERT, New Delhi.
- The chosen applicant will only be given the scholarship if he or she chooses to study in India.
