Candidates always enter a certain profession with the aspirations to rise to a rank as high as possible. Banking Sector is also a career field where candidates wish to be promoted to the highest ranks over a period of time. There are two ways to get a job in the banking sector, namely, Clerical Cadre and Officer Cadre. Various banks conduct their own exams to recruit eligible and interested candidates for these posts. The recruitment process involves written exams and interview/group dicussion. After getting selected, candidates tend to seach for opportunities for promotions and career growth.
These days exams conducted by Banks to recruit candidates at Clerical posts are very competitive as there are a lot of Baking aspirants who opt for these exams. As a Clerk in a bank, candidates often wonder about the growth opportunities therein and often a questions strikes candidates' minds that if they can ever rise to the position of General Manager. The answer to this question is Yes! Candidates that join different banks as Clerks can certainly rise to the position of General Manager. There are certain eligibility crtierias that must be fulfilled for the candidates to be able to do this. Once a candidates completes a certain time period as Clerk, he/she can be promoted to the Officer Cadre as either a Trainee Officer or Junior Manager Grade Officer Scale-I. The process to achieve this is described below.

There are different ways for a Clerk to rise to Officer Cadre which are as follows:
1) Internal Examination: All the public sector banks conduct internal examinations every two years for their employees who want to rise to Officer cadre. Candidates who are interested in the Officer cadre can take this exam. There are certain eligibility criterias laid down for candidates/employees to be able to take this exam which are as follows:
  •  Candidates should have served for 3 years in the bank and should have qualified/completed Certified Association of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) Exam, OR
  •  Candidates should have served for 4 years in the bank and should have qualified/completed Junior Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (JAIIB) Exam, OR
  •  a minimum of 6 years of service in the bank

After getting selected as a Trainee Officer, candidates have to serve a probation period of two years. After the probation period is over, candidates are either promoted to MMGS-II or back to Clerical Cadre depending on the performance of the candidates. The perks and salary of the Trainee Officer is same as that of a Probationary Officer.

2) OJM Internal Exam: This is another internal exam conducted by the banks. This also has some eligibility criteria which is as follows:

  •  Candidate serving as a Clerk should have completed minimum 6 years of service under fast track promotion channel, OR
  •  Candidate serving as a Clerk should have completed 12 years of service under normal promotion channel


This exam consists of written exam and interview. If candidates get promotion through this exam, then the perks are the same as that of Probationary Officers however the salary is a little lesser.
