The Office of the Commissioner for Government Examinations has released the KTET eligibility criteria in the official notification of February 2022. Candidates can check out the details of the KTET Eligibility criteria in the notification.

The Kerala Teachers Eligibility Test (KTET) is a certification exam for aspirants who wish to apply for a teacher’s job in various schools of Kerala.

  • The KTET Eligibility criteria comprise age limit, educational qualifications, experience, nationality, number of attempts, etc.
  • Eligibility for any post is a prerequisite as it helps the authorities to decide the most suitable candidates for the respective post.

KTET Age Limit

There is no set age limit for appearing for the KTET exam. Candidates fulfilling all the educational requirements as per the KTET Eligibility criteria can apply for the certification test.

Age Relaxation

Category I (Lower Primary Classes)

Relaxation of 5% in qualifying marks is admissible for candidates belonging to SC/ST and Differently abled categories. Also, a relaxation of 3% in qualifying marks is given to OBC & OEC candidates.

Category II (Upper Primary Classes)

Relaxation up to 5 within the qualifying marks shall be allowed to the candidates belonging to SC/ST and Differently abled categories. Relaxation of 3 & within the minimum qualifying marks is admissible for OBC & OEC candidates.

Category III (High School Classes)

Candidates belonging to SC/ST and differently-abled categories shall be granted a relaxation of fifty marks within the minimum qualifying marks. Relaxation of 3% within the qualifying marks to OBC & OEC candidates for the K-TET- III.

Category IV (Language teacher or specialist teacher)

Candidates belonging to SC/ST and differently-abled categories are going to be granted a relaxation of fifty marks within the qualifying marks prescribed for the eligibility to seem for the K-TET-IV. 

Candidates belonging to OBC & OEC categories are going to be granted a relaxation of three marks within the qualifying marks prescribed for the eligibility to seem for K-TET-IV.

KTET Educational Qualification

The KTET Eligibility criteria has been defined as per the required educational qualification. The candidates who wish to attain this certificate must have the following qualification as per each KTET paper.

KTET Exam Category

Education Qualification

Category I (Lower Primary Classes)

The candidate must have cleared Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary with at least 45% with either:

  • 2-year Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC)
  • 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education

The candidate must have cleared Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary with at least 50% with either

  • 4 year Bachelor of Elementary Education
  • 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education)

Candidates from the SC/ST and differently abled groups are eligible for a 5% qualifying mark relaxation. OBC and OEC candidates are also given a 3% reduction in qualifying marks.

Category II (Upper Primary Classes)

The applicant must be a holder of BA/BSc/BCom degree with either:

  •  2-year Diploma in Elementary Education/Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC)
  • 1 year Bachelor in Education

Candidate should have passed Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary (with at least 50% ) with either:

  • 4 year Bachelor in Elementary Education (BElEd)
  • 4-year BA/B.Sc.Ed or BA Ed or B.Sc.Ed.

Candidates from the SC/ST and differently abled categories will be given a 5-percentage-point reduction in their qualifying marks. Additionally, OBC and OEC candidates are eligible for a 3% reduction in the minimum qualifying marks.

Category III (High School Classes)

Either of the following:

  • BA/BSc/BCom (45% marks) + B.Ed. Degree in concerned subject
  • For Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology: MScEd Degree (50% marks) in the concerned subject.
  • For Botany and Zoology: MScEd Degree in Life Science (50%)
  • BA (45% marks) + passed in LTTC
  • Candidates who earned their degrees through accredited correspondence courses or open universities should obtain and present certificates of recognition and equivalency from any of Kerala's institutions.
  • Only the grades from the main and subsidiary papers will be taken into account when determining the required criteria.
  • Candidates from the SC/ST and differently abled groups will be given a 5% mark reduction in the minimum qualifying marks. OBC and OEC candidates can get a 3% reduction in their qualifying scores if they take the K-TET- III.

Category IV (Language teacher or specialist teacher)

Required qualification as stated in chapter XXXI, Kerala Education Act & Rules for the post of Language Teachers of Arabic, Hindi, Sanskrit & Urdu (up to Upper Primary level), Specialist teachers & Physical Education

 

KTET Nationality

The following candidates can apply for the KTET Exam: 

  • Citizen of India
  • Candidates from all over the country are eligible to apply for the test, however, preference is given to candidates belonging to the state of Kerala. 

Number of Attempts For KTET Exam

Candidates who want to have this certificate can appear for the test as many times as they want. There is no restriction or limitation on the number of attempts. Candidates who have already appeared in the KTET exam once can give the exam again to improve their score. The legitimacy of the KTET qualifying certificate is for up to 7 years from the date of passing the test.

KTET Experience

The KTET Eligibility Criteria states that a candidate does not need to have any particular experience of teaching in order to apply for the KTET exam. Candidates having prior experience in the teaching field have an edge over the freshers. However, candidates with no prior experience are also eligible to apply for the KTET Exam to obtain the certificate.

Some Additional KTET Eligibility Criteria for Students

  • Candidates for the KTET III category must have acquired their Diploma/Degree in teaching in any subject and be approved by the Universities/NCTE/Board of Examination/Kerala Government. They must present the relevant certifications in order to demonstrate that they have a teaching diploma recognised by the Kerala government's universities.
  • Candidates who obtained their diplomas through recognised correspondence courses or Open Universities can also provide certificates from any of Kerala's universities, or an equivalence.
  • Only the grades from the main and subsidiary papers will be used to determine the minimum criteria.

  • Candidates must make sure to prepare the syllabus of the concerned paper depending on the classes they want to teach.
  • Candidates can only apply if they fulfil the education qualification and KTET Age Limit as well as Eligibility Criteria as it is the only requirement to be eligible to apply for KTET.
  • The KTET exam is a certification exam for candidates seeking teaching jobs in schools of Kerala. Candidates must submit all the asked documents and clear the test to attain the certificate.

What should I do if I do not qualify the eligibility criteria for the KTET exam?


The KTET eligibility criteria is a must for every candidate to get the certificate, if you do not qualify it, you can try another year.

My age is above 42 but I come under the PwD reservation, am I still eligible?


Yes, candidates under the PwD reservation are eligible even if they are over the age of 42 because there is no age limit or restriction for appearing for the KTET exam.

Is it necessary for the candidate applying for the KTET examination to have working experience?


No, the candidate doesn't need to have working experience in the teaching field for applying for the KTET exam. However, if the candidates do have prior experience in teaching, it gives them an upper hand over others.
