Another notable mention must be made of Chief Of Defence Staff, to whom all the Defense Chiefs Report. CDS is a Four Staff General. He is the senior-most and highest-ranking uniformed officer on active duty in the Indian military. Late General Bipin Rawat who lost his life in the recent Helicopter Crash was the first and only CDS in India. List Of Cheif Of Army Staff

Chief of Army Staff is the highest-ranking officer and  Principal Advisor to the Minister Of Defence. He serves directly under the Supreme Commander of Defence Forces i.e- President Of India. The post of Indian Army Chief was known as the Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army from 1947- 1948. From 1948 - to 1955, the position was known as Chief of the Army Staff and Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army.
