Candidate should be
- A citizen of India OR
- A subject of Sikkim
- A person of Indian origin migrated to India with intentions of permanent settlement from Pakistan(subject to the State Government issuing a certificate of eligibility in their favor.).
The certificate of eligibility in respect of a candidate falling under this category will be valid only for a period of one year from the date of his appointment and thereafter he can be retained in that position only if he is in India.
- An Indian or Nepali from a French or Portuguese territory (subject to the State Government issuing a certificate of eligibility in their favor.)

Unreserved male candidates should be 18 to 33 years of age to be eligible for MP Jail Prahari Exam.
Women and reserved category candidates should be 18 to 38 years of age to be eligible for MP Jail Prahari Exam.
A resident of the state who has been working under the state government for more than 7 years will also get 3 years' age relaxation.
