DSP Full Form
DSP stands for the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the commissar system and was created in 1876 when the Indianization Policy was enacted. Originally a rank held only by Indians, it was equivalent to the Vice Superintendent (a rank held only by Europeans at the time). A Deputy Superintendent (DSP or DySP) is currently a State Constable in the State Police, either directly in the ranks or promoted from Inspector. Deputy Police Commissioners who are members of the National Guard may be promoted to the Indian Police after a limited period of service, ranging from 8 to 15 years depending on the state. Deputy Superintendents are usually district county officers appointed in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, rank is commonly known as Circle Officer (CO), which is not strictly accurate as CO is a post and not a rank.
