 Sagarmala is a dream project of the Central Government of India, on completion of which all the cities connected with the coastline will be connected.The Sagarmala program is an Indian government initiative aimed at improving the country’s logistics sector. The program aims to unlock the potential of waterways and the economy to minimize the burden of infrastructure investment to achieve these goals
 
India’s maritime sector is a cornerstone of the country’s trade and has grown over the years. India’s 7,500 km long coastline, 14,500 km of navigable waterways, and strategic location on major international maritime trade routes are extremely beneficial to trade and commerce.
 

Sagarmala project: Aim

 
Saaremaa’s ambitious program aims to promote port–driven development in the country and reduce logistics costs for EXIM and domestic trade. The project also aims to strengthen infrastructure for the rapid, efficient and cost-effective transport of goods to and from ports. As of March 2020, some 500 projects with a total investment value of USD 47.33 billion have been identified. Of these, 143 projects worth US $ 11.73 billion have been completed, with the remaining 357 projects at various stages of implementation and development.

Sagarmala Seaplane Services (SSPS) – It is an ambitious project, announced in January 2021, which is being implemented by Sagarmala Development Company Limited. The project is being initiated under a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) framework through prospective airline operators.
 

What is the purpose of the Sagar mala project/ initiative?

 
The main objective of the Sagarmala Initiative are given below:-
 
• Promote the direct and indirect development of port industries and coastal cities.
• Provide infrastructure to move goods quickly from one port to another.
• Reduce logistics costs and increase efficiency.
• Develop gateways to new regions with intermodal solutions to increase connectivity between ports, rail, inland, coastal and road services.
• Modernize primary and secondary ports. Make them efficient by developing them economically, transporting assets, creating new routes (using various other modes of transport), etc.
• Helps establish nearby industries and manufacturing centers and serves for EXIM and in-country trades.
• Encourage the use of electronic channels to exchange information for fast, easy and efficient movement of cargo through ports.
• Ensure a sustainable life for people living in and near the Coastal Economic Zone (CEZ), helping them in terms of development, employment, skills development, fishing, tourism promotion, and many more .

 CEZ is stand for costal ecomonic zone .The Ministry of Naval has introduced the Coastal Economic Zone (CEZ). CEZs are categorized to develop the economic status of the country by initiating port – led industry.
