He is one of the few legendary sportsmen awarded almost all prestigious sports awards such as Arjuna Award (1999), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2001), Padma Shri (2005), Dronacharya Award (2009) and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar (2013). Further, he was also awarded Padma Bhushan in 2014.
