What was the position of urbanisation in India till the beginning of the 20th century ?
Urbanisation in India was slow under the colonial rule. The number of cities was small. In the early twentieth century, no more than 11 per cent of the Indians were living in cities. A large proportion of these urban dwellers were residents of three Presidency cities. The Presidency cities were multifunctional cities because they had major ports, warehouses, homes and offices, army camps as well as educational institutions, museums and libraries.
