George Eliot (1819-1880) was the pen-name of Mary Ann Evans. She was a very popular novelist and believed that novels gave women a special opportunity to express themselves freely. She believed that every woman could see herself as capable of writing fiction. She said, “Fiction is a department of literature in which women can, after their kind fully equal men No educational restrictions can shut women from the materials of fiction, and there is no species of art that is so free from rigid requirements.”
