When did the novels develop in India and why ?
(1) The novels developed in India in the 19th century. (2) Causes for development of novels : India became familiar with the Western novel. Development of the vernaculars, print and a reading public helped in the development of novel. One of the earliest Indian novels in Marathi was Baba Padmanji’s Yamuna Paryatan (1857) which used a simple style of storytelling to speak about the plight of widows. Translation of novels into different languages too helped in the development.
