Describe any four geographical conditions required for the growth of sugarcane.
(1) The following geographical conditions are required for the cultivation of sugarcane : It is a tropical as well as subtropical crop. It grows well in hot and humid climate with a temperature of 21 °C to 27 °C. It requires an annual rainfall between 75 cm and 100 cm. In areas of less rainfall, it requires irrigation. It can be grown on a variety of soils. It needs manual labour from sowing to harvesting and is a long duration crop. (2) The major sugarcane producing states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. (3) It is the main source of sugar, gur (jaggary), khandsari and molasses. (4) India is the second largest producer of sugarcane only after Brazil.
