Where the most manufacturing units were located in the pre-independence period ? What were the results ?
In the pre-independence period, the manufacturing units were located in places keeping in view the overseas trade. These places were Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Result : The result of locating the manufacturing industries at Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and other places was the emergence of certain pockets of industrially developed urban centers surrounded by a huge agricultural rural hinterland. First cotton textile mill was set up at Mumbai in 1854. First jute mill was established at Rishra near Kolkata in 1859.
